Course Description:
This course includes semiconductor-based devices such as diodes, bipolar transistors, FETs, thermistors, and related components . Emphasis is placed on analysis, selection, biasing, and applications in power supplies, small signal amplifiers, and switching and control circuits. Upon completion, students should be able to construct, analyze, verify, and troubleshoot discrete component circuits using appropriate techniques and test equipment.
Course Objectives and Competencies
You will learn the proper operation of electronic devices and how they are used in electronic applications. You will be expected to achieve a competent level of understanding of semiconductor devices and their applications. The following topics will be covered during the semester.
• Diodes
• Special purpose diodes
• Rectifier circuits
• Power supply circuits
• Bipolar Junction Transistors
• Transistor biasing
• Transistor switching circuits
• Transistor amplifier arrangements
• Field Effect Transistors
• Power amplifiers
• Amplifier Frequency Response
• Thyristor Circuits and applications
Class Policies and Procedures:
The Wilkes Community College catalog (current edition) contains information relating to student policies and procedures. All students should read and understand them. Questions concerning any policy or procedure should be directed to the instructor.
Grading System
The grading system for this course is as follows:
(for other grade assignments, see the college catalog)
Your grade will be the average of your Classroom Grade and your Lab Grade. You will receive a numerical grade for both sections. Each will count as 50% of your grade for a total of 100%.
Attendance
Students are responsible for attendance and are expected to be punctual and to attend every class session. Regardless of reasons for absences, students will be held accountable for all academic activities. Make-up assignments or tests may be given to compensate for absences. You are allowed to miss twice the number of classes the class meets per week. Missed class work can be difficult to make up and every effort should be made to be at all classes. If you miss more than the maximum allowed, you may not receive credit for the course. Leaving class before being dismissed will result in an absence. Arriving late for class twice will result in an absence (each occurrence). The college catalog should be consulted for more information.
Academic Integrity
You are responsible for knowing and observing the Wilkes Community College's academic integrity policy which "sets forth the standards of academic honesty and integrity for students in any of the college's academic offerings." (WCC catalog). Violations include, but are not limited to, cheating; fabricating or falsification of information; plagiarism; forgery; intentionally destroying, stealing, or making inaccessible library/resource material or equipment; and knowingly helping another commit one of the above acts. Penalties for these acts vary and range from a formal warning to suspension from the college and civil prosecution, if appropriate. For a complete copy of the policy on academic integrity, contact the Student Services Office.
Faculty Evaluation
Normally, you will complete an evaluation of me as it applies to this course sometime during the semester. You will answer both objective questions and provide written comments. Your honesty in completing these evaluations helps both the instructor and the college in improving my teaching methods.
Student Conduct
Students are expected to conduct themselves at all times as mature adults and respect the rights, privileges, and personal property of others. Physical abuse, verbal abuse (including course language or gestures), or harassment of students, faculty, or staff is considered a violation of the student conduct code. Intentional disruption or obstruction of teaching, administration, or other college activities is prohibited. Violation may result in suspension or dismissal. Please refer to the college catalog for more information.
Food Products
Food products and drinks may not be brought into the Lab areas without permission of the instructor.
